Safari information

What a Ranthambore safari involves

Every safari follows the same rhythm: a fixed shift, an entry gate and a forest department guide with you in the park.

  • Morning and afternoon shifts, timings set by the forest department each season
  • Around three hours inside the park, hotel pick-up and drop included
  • Gypsy for private groups, Canter for a shared and lighter per-person cost
  • Valid photo ID needed for every guest at the time of booking
  • Beyond tigers: leopards, sloth bears, deer, crocodiles, birds and old ruins

Choose your vehicle

Gypsy jeep or shared Canter

Both follow the same forest routes, so pick the one that suits your group size and budget.

Private jeep

Gypsy

An open jeep booked for your group alone, with room for the driver and forest guide.

  • Up to 6 guests per vehicle
  • Flexible stops and better angles for photography
  • Quieter ride, good for families and small groups
  • Best when comfort and space matter most
Shared vehicle

Canter

A larger safari vehicle shared with other guests, ideal when you want the forest at a lower cost.

  • Suits bigger groups and budget travellers
  • Lower cost per person
  • Same zones, routes and forest guide as the Gypsy
  • Good first choice for families with older children

Please note: sightings depend on the day, not the vehicle. Your guide follows alarm calls, pugmarks and fresh signs to give every group the best chance.

Explore the ten Ranthambore safari zones

Ranthambore National Park is divided into ten numbered zones, each with its own terrain, water bodies and forest character. The zone for your shift is allotted by the Forest Department, so a preference is a request rather than a guarantee.

Ranthambore safari Zone 1, Kothi & Singh Dwar
Grassland & water

Zone 1 · Kothi & Singh Dwar

The Singh Dwar entry, and a buffer-zone forest that has drawn repeated big-cat records.

Plan this zone
Ranthambore safari Zone 2, Kota & Andal Lake
Scrub, forest & water holes

Zone 2 · Kota & Andal Lake

One of the most productive zones in the park, where scrub and water holes bring cats out onto the track.

Plan this zone
Ranthambore safari Zone 3, Badi & Padam Talab
Water bodies & open clearings

Zone 3 · Badi & Padam Talab

Padam Talab, High Point, Raj Bagh and Mandook, where animals are watched around water they know well.

Plan this zone
Ranthambore safari Zone 4, Jamun, Mogia & Malik Talab
Dense forest & nullahs

Zone 4 · Jamun, Mogia & Malik Talab

The zone Machli made famous, with thick forest, nullahs and a set of well-travelled stops.

Plan this zone
Ranthambore safari Zone 5, Tatiwas & Gopal Sethu
Forest & nullahs

Zone 5 · Tatiwas & Gopal Sethu

Entered from the same gate as Zone 4, and a quieter forest with fewer vehicles on the same tracks.

Plan this zone
Ranthambore safari Zone 6, Kundal & Chinkal
Open grassland & hills

Zone 6 · Kundal & Chinkal

Wide grassland backed by hills, sharing a boundary with Zone 1 but looking nothing like it.

Plan this zone
Ranthambore safari Zone 7, Chidikho
Dry forest & scrub

Zone 7 · Chidikho

Fewer reliable stops than most zones, so a slow driver is rewarded with more ground covered quietly.

Plan this zone
Ranthambore safari Zone 8, Balas & Kherai
Grassland & open forest

Zone 8 · Balas & Kherai

The same block as Zone 7, with stops spread further apart across more open country.

Plan this zone
Ranthambore safari Zone 9, Kuwalji & Chakal River
Riverine & acacia

Zone 9 · Kuwalji & Chakal River

About forty-five minutes from the main reserve, on the Chakal river, with a very different landscape.

Plan this zone
Ranthambore safari Zone 10, Aantri
Forest & streams

Zone 10 · Aantri

A quieter southern zone with relatively unbroken cover and some of the best birding in the park.

Plan this zone

Please note: Safari zone allocation is decided by the Forest Department and depends on gate capacity, daily limits and the number of safaris already booked. Sightings cannot be guaranteed, and zone boundaries, stops and water conditions can change with park management.

FAQ

Before you book

How do I book a safari with Bigstriped Cat Safari Tours?

Fill the enquiry form, call or message us on WhatsApp at +91 94689 20940 with your dates, number of guests and preferred safari. We check availability, confirm the shift and vehicle, and tell you the next steps.

What is the best time for a Ranthambore safari?

The park is generally open from October to June and closed in the monsoon. Winter is comfortable, while summer mornings are popular for wildlife sightings. See our guide on the best time to visit for more detail.

Is a tiger sighting guaranteed?

No. Tigers, leopards and cheetahs are wild animals, and no operator can guarantee a sighting. Taking more than one safari improves your chances.

What documents do I need for a safari?

The forest department asks for valid photo ID for every guest, and the name on the ID should match the booking. Share the ID details with us at the time of booking.

Can you plan a trip that covers several parks?

Yes. We create itineraries combining Ranthambore with Jhalana, Sariska, Kuno and the Chambal river, along with hotels and a private taxi.

Do you provide pick-up from Sawai Madhopur railway station?

Yes. Our taxi service covers station and airport transfers, local sightseeing and outstation trips with experienced drivers.
